What will it cost to tax?

On the V5C, section D.2. Only used for the first year
Including options — not what you paid
Decides whether the expensive-car supplement still applies
£0 a year

    How it works

    • Year one is a one-off rate set by CO₂, usually built into the price of a new car. Above 150 g/km it jumps sharply.
    • Every year after is a flat £200, whatever the car emits. Alternative-fuel cars pay £10 less.
    • Expensive-car supplement: £440 a year for five years, from the second time the car is taxed, if the list price was over £40,000 — or £50,000 for an electric car. It follows the car, not the owner.
    • Paying monthly adds about £10 a year.
Two things this does not cover

Cars registered before April 2017 are taxed on the older CO₂ band or engine-size systems — check those on gov.uk. And a diesel that does not meet the RDE2 standard pays one CO₂ band higher in its first year.

Sources: standard rate, supplement, thresholds and payment loading — gov.uk; first-year CO₂ rates — RAC. Rates change every April — confirm before budgeting. Last reviewed September 2026.
