What is in it, and what it answers
| Section | The question it settles |
|---|---|
| Capacities & fluids | Which oil grade and how many litres — the one thing you must not guess |
| Tyre pressures | Laden and unladen, front and rear. Most people run the unladen figure fully loaded |
| Warning lamps | What that symbol means on your car. The common ones |
| Fuse charts | Ten minutes and a £1 fuse instead of a diagnostic charge |
| Bulb types | The right part number before you drive to the shop |
| Service schedule | Miles or months, whichever comes first — usually months on a low-mileage car |
| Towing & loading | Maximum noseweight and towing limits, which are model-specific |
| Jacking points | Where it is safe to lift. Getting this wrong bends sills |
Using a PDF properly
- Search it, do not scroll it. Ctrl+F (Cmd+F on a Mac) and type “tyre pressure” or “fuse”. A 400-page handbook becomes a two-second lookup.
- Check the model year. A facelift can change fuse layouts and bulb types. Match the year on your V5C.
- Save it offline on your phone. You need it on a dark forecourt, which is exactly where the signal is worst.
- Print two pages — tyre pressures and the fuse chart — and put them in the glovebox.
- Keep it with the car when you sell. A folder with the handbook, receipts and MOT history is worth real money to a buyer.
Handbook or workshop manual?
| PDF owner’s handbook | Workshop manual | |
|---|---|---|
| For | The driver | The person with the car in pieces |
| Covers | Fluids, pressures, lamps, fuses, schedule | Repair procedures, torque settings, wiring diagrams |
| Cost | Free | Book, or an online subscription |
| Enough for | Six of our eight DIY jobs | Brakes, suspension, timing belts |
Haynes has stopped producing new printed workshop manuals for recent models, so for anything newer than roughly ten years old the choice is an online subscription or the forums. The free PDF handbook covers more of the gap than most owners realise.
Quick answers
Is downloading a PDF manual legal?
Manufacturers publish owner’s handbooks for their customers, and archives collect them. Use them for the car you own or are buying.
I do not know my exact model year.
The V5C gives the date of first registration; the VIN on the windscreen base or door pillar gives the build. Match the handbook to that, not to the shape.
The manual does not mention my warning light.
Extra lamps arrive with options and facelifts. Check the infotainment or hybrid supplement — they are often separate PDFs.
Can I use a manual from a different market?
Carefully. Fluid specs and lamp symbols usually match, but equipment, fuse layouts and tyre pressures can differ between markets.
